The Township of South Orange Village is a suburb in the New York City Metropolitan area, located in Essex County.  It is one of only four villages in the state of New Jersey.  South Orange has a population approaching 17,000, with approximately 5,500 households.  South Orange Village was formed on May 4, 1869 within what was then called South Orange Township, which is now Maplewood, New Jersey.  South Orange is governed under a Special Charter by a six member board of trustees and a village president.  Trustees and the president are elected in nonpartisan elections on an at-large basis to staggered four-year terms of office.  The Township of South Orange Village is home to Seton Hall University.   The western edge of town borders the South Mountain Reservation, a 2,047 acre nature reserve.

South Orange is located adjacent to Maplewood, New Jersey and the two towns share many services and events.  The South Orange Municipal Court and Violations Bureau are located in the new Maplewood Police and Court Building at 1618 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, New Jersey.
